The power of community: How the insurance industry is changing lives

By Blake Dyason

I’ve always believed that community is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s on trails or in the boardroom, people coming together with a shared purpose can move mountains.

At CN&CO, we’ve spent years working alongside some of the biggest names in the insurance industry, helping companies grow, connect and build a legacy. We believe that the insurance industry is the backbone of the economy and steps up when communities need it most.

As the Chairman of Malachi Place of Safety, a safe home in Cape Town for abandoned and abused children, I’ve witnessed firsthand how the support of a caring community makes a difference. Over the years, we have had amazing support from FIA Tygerberg Branch, Leppard, EasyEquities, and many other people and brands in the industry.

We got a new van

One of our biggest challenges at Malachi in 2024 was making sure our kids could get to school, activities and medical appointments safely. And just when we needed it most, Leppard, one of Lombard Insurance Company’s underwriting managers, stepped in to help us buy a van.

For our kids the van is a symbol of freedom, opportunity and security.

More than just a business

Leppard’s generosity doesn’t stop with Malachi. They also support Maletsatsi Foundation, another incredible organisation providing love and care to children in need. Leppard’s approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) is authentic and generous — it’s about making a lasting difference.

That’s why I was so honoured to be invited onto the Leppard podcast alongside Glenn Standen (Leppard CEO), Milesha Chetty (Executive Head of Marketing), and Tiffini Hein (Maletsatsi Foundation). Normally, this podcast dives into industry insights for brokers, but this time we spoke about how businesses and individuals can create real, lasting change.

In our conversation, we explored:

  • The power of intentional giving beyond Mandela Day
  • The impact of long-term community partnerships
  • How small acts of kindness can transform lives

The ripple effect

Every contribution – no matter how small – creates a ripple effect. Whether it’s funding a van, mentoring a child or simply spreading awareness, each act of kindness adds up.

So, to all the businesses, teams and individuals who choose to give back… thank you! Your support means the world to us, and more importantly, to the children whose futures are brighter because of you.
