The Ink Link: In loving memory

The Ink Link is an ongoing project at CN&CO that showcases the diversity of tattoos. One of the great things about a tattoo is that it goes against the commonly held viewpoint that “what you see is what you get”. There’s a misguided belief in certain quarters that only “”some”” people get a tattoo. We are putting paid to that perception through the stories showcased in the Ink Link. If you or anyone you know would like to be featured, please get in contact with us.

This Ink link is about our very own Stella Carter, and her tattoo.

I lost my mom nine years ago. She was my best friend, and when she left us suddenly, my whole world crumbled. Life is supposed to prepare us for the loss of our parents, but nothing truly gets you ready for the void they leave behind. I felt completely lost.

We spoke every day—about everything and nothing. She was my safe space. I could share whatever was on my mind, no matter how delusional. She listened, she laughed, and she loved—so deeply.

One morning, I woke up with the sudden desire to honour my beloved mom with a tattoo on my back. After some research, I settled on a poppy. I chose red-orange hues because they were her favourite colours. The poppy has a long stem that runs down the length of my spine. Woven into that stem are the words: “alive in heart, mind, and soul.” These words couldn’t be more true. She may not be with me physically, but she is deeply embedded in every part of who I am—walking with me through life, parenting, and everything in between.

I deliberately chose to place the tattoo on my back. I don’t always see it—but I know it’s there, and I love it. Just like my mom: no longer here in body, but always here in spirit. That quiet presence fills me with love and pushes me to be the person she loved and believed in.

I have plans to add to this tattoo over time. When the inspiration strikes, ink will meet skin.

Stella is a marketing all-rounder. Her strengths lie in big-picture thinking and bringing it all together. She likes to work and train hard and will not shy away from a challenge. She is also Greek, so #winning!
