CN&CO Podcast Recommendation: Ryan Sandes on The Real Science of Sport
At CN&CO, we believe in the power of stories, ideas, and conversations that challenge, inspire, and educate. That’s why we launched the CN&CO Podcast Recommendation Series, where our team—and sometimes even our friends and clients—share standout podcasts that sparked our curiosity. Whether it’s an insightful deep dive, a laugh-out-loud moment, or a perspective-shifting experience, we want to bring you podcasts that leave a lasting impression. Expect a diverse mix of topics, from business and leadership to science, philosophy, and beyond.
This week’s recommendation comes from me, Blake Dyason.
As someone who lives and breathes the outdoors, I’m excited to share one of my all-time favourite podcasts, The Real Science of Sport. Even better—it’s proudly South African! Hosted by Professor Ross Tucker and sports editor Mike Finch, the show dives deep into the science, psychology, and strategy behind all kinds of sports.
The spotlight is on none other than Ryan Sandes, South Africa’s trail running icon, who recently claimed second place in the Cocodona 250-miler (402km)—one of the toughest ultra-distance trail races in the world.
This episode features Sean Robson—trail running enthusiast and the voice behind many of South Africa’s running events—joining Mike Finch as co-host. Together, they unpack Ryan’s incredible achievement with insights into what goes on behind the scenes from training, coaches, support and mindset.
Some highlights from the episode:
* Ryan’s mind-blowing training and lifetime mileage
* His approach to nutrition and race strategy
* What motivates him to take on these extreme challenges
* How he’s avoided major injury while staying at the top of his game
* And how, as one of the oldest athletes still competing at the highest level, he continues to defy expectations
Give it a listen, support South African athletes and podcasts.
