Vacancy: Head of St John’s Preparatory School

Starting in April 2026, the Head of St John’s Preparatory will take on the leadership of the Prep School, including the Pre-Prep, The Bridge Nursery School and Aftercare. It’s a big job, with the chance to make a real and lasting impact on the lives of young boys – and on the future of the broader College community.
About the role
The successful applicant will be responsible for guiding the Prep School’s strategic direction and daily life, while aligning closely with the wider vision of St John’s College. That means working with the Executive Headmaster, leading a dedicated team of teachers and support staff and making sure that boys at every level thrive – academically, culturally, socially and spiritually.
You will need to:
- Lead with purpose and empathy
- Champion academic and co-curricular excellence
- Support diversity, inclusion and transformation
- Embrace the Anglican ethos of the school
- Think strategically and act decisively
This is a great opportunity for a current Head or a strong Deputy who’s ready to step into a top leadership role.

St John’s College, founded in 1898 and located in Houghton, Johannesburg, is a school steeped in tradition but always looking forward. The Prep School – the oldest part of the College – is a nurturing and inspiring environment where young boys are supported to grow in body, mind and character.
What we’re looking for
We’re on the lookout for someone with:
- At least five years in senior school leadership
- A postgraduate qualification in education or a related field
- A proven ability to lead high-performing teams
- A deep understanding of the South African education system
- Strong communication skills and sound financial understanding
- A natural affinity with the values and mission of St John’s
