klein wêreld! residency invites you to be part of something magical
This July, a unique artistic experience is taking root at Rosemary Hill just outside Pretoria. Curated by Wêreld in collaboration with the Greenhouse Café Conservatory, klein wêreld! is a two-week immersive residency designed to spark creativity, collaboration and public engagement, culminating in a vibrant three-day exhibition of small artworks, combined with workshops and conversations.
Jaco van der Merwe, artist, poet and the driving force behind Wêreld, describes the project as “a celebration of intimacy – in scale, in space and in connection. We wanted to create an environment where artists can slow down, engage deeply with their work and share that journey with others.”
Over the course of 14 days, selected artists will live and work at Rosemary Hill’s organic farm, housed in beautiful treehouses and creative studio pods. Their time in residency will include not only space to produce but also moments to interact through public walkabouts, meet-the-maker sessions and artist-led workshops. The experience culminates in the klein wêreld! Exhibition from 18 to 20 July, showcasing over 100 small-format artworks, which will all be available for purchase.
Importantly, the programme relies on the support of patrons and partners to make it accessible to a wide range of artists. A full sponsorship of R43,400 covers accommodation, studio time and meals for the duration of the residency. Half sponsorships are also available. In return, benefactors are invited to participate in the residency process – curating artists, attending special events, and even receiving an artwork created during the residency.
As a registered PBO, Wêreld can issue 18A certificates, making your contribution tax-deductible. It’s a meaningful way to support South African art while enjoying direct access to emerging talent and a community of creatives.
“At its core,” says Jaco, “klein wêreld! is about creating room for wonder. About showing that big ideas can exist in small works, and that small encounters can have lasting impact.”
