TED Talk Tuesday #305: Starting with ‘Why?’
TED continues to spread ideas and help us all be better critical thinkers. Watching, listening and talking about TED Talks is a popular pastime for many in the CN&CO community. We visit TED.com regularly to clear our heads, have a laugh, learn or get inspired. TED Talks open our minds, spark new ways of thinking and can lead to some very interesting conversations and business opportunities. From time to time we pick a favourite and publish it on a Tuesday, because we like how “TED Talk Tuesday” sounds. It’s also a way that the CN&CO team play their part in spreading ideas and helping to make the world a better place.
This talk was chosen by Stella Carter.
In his well-known TED Talk, How Great Leaders Inspire Action, Simon Sinek introduces a simple but powerful idea: the most inspiring organisations don’t start by explaining what they do, they start with why they exist.
Using his Golden Circle framework, Sinek explains that while most businesses communicate from the outside in (what they do, then how they do it), those that truly connect do the opposite. They lead with purpose. Their why. Their belief or reason for being – becomes the foundation for everything else, from products to messaging to culture.
This idea resonates strongly in marketing.
You can have a beautifully designed website, carefully chosen words and strong visuals. But if those elements aren’t grounded in a clear understanding of why your business exists, they struggle to gain traction. Purpose gives marketing depth. It shapes tone, guides decisions and helps businesses focus their efforts instead of trying to be everywhere at once.
Clarity around why also influences how businesses choose the people they work with. The strongest marketing partnerships aren’t purely transactional – they’re built on shared values and mutual understanding. When external partners understand and align with your purpose, they’re better equipped to help translate intention into meaningful presence, rather than just producing activity.
At its core, Sinek’s message is a reminder that effective marketing isn’t about being louder; it’s about being clearer. When businesses take the time to define their why and collaborate with partners who respect and support it, marketing becomes more intentional, more human and more sustainable. This is the space CN&CO chooses to work in – helping brands think clearly, show up thoughtfully and find ways to share their message that feel aligned, not forced.
