Recruitment Unfiltered: The emotional side of job searching

By Michele Katz

Dear candidates,

You’re not crazy, job searching IS emotional.

Let’s be honest: job searching is basically the emotional equivalent of going on 47 first dates in a row – except you have to pretend you’re not desperate, you have to keep a straight face when someone says, “We’ll get back to you soon,” even though “soon” could mean anything from tomorrow to when the next comet passes Earth, and politely smile while uploading your CV again into an application system that asks you to manually retype every single detail – including the month you graduated high school.

Candidates don’t talk about it enough. Recruiters don’t always acknowledge it enough. And the world seems to forget that behind every CV is a real human being with feelings, fears, hopes and a carefully crafted professional summary that took four hours and three existential crises.

So, this month, I want to talk about the emotional side of job searching – the part nobody puts on LinkedIn because society prefers #grateful, #blessed and #opentowork, not “I’m hanging on by a tiny thread and a large coffee.”

The rollercoaster is real

If you’re a candidate, you’ve likely experienced the full spectrum of human emotion before 10am.:

  • Excitement: “This role was MADE for me.”
  • Doubt: “This role was made for… someone who is not me.”
  • Over-analysis: “Why haven’t I heard back yet? Maybe they’re still deciding. Maybe they’ve moved offices. Maybe their email is down. Maybe…”
  • Hope: “They want an interview!”
  • Fear: “Oh no… they want an interview.”

And then there’s the ultimate emotional plot twist: “We’ve decided to move forward with another candidate.”

Ouch. No matter how strong you are, that one stings.

Rejection doesn’t mean “not good enough”. It means “not the right match”

As a recruiter (and an emotional support animal disguised as one), I see this all the time: incredible people convinced they are somehow inadequate simply because they didn’t land one role.

Let me say this clearly and loudly: Rejection in job searching is rarely about your worth. It’s about fit, timing, budget, team dynamics, internal politics and about 17 factors you never see.

You are not defined by one “no.” You’re built for the “yes” that actually fits you. And sometimes that “yes” is slow because the universe is double‑checking your alignment.

Trust the pause — it’s not empty, it’s preparing.

The guilt candidates never talk about…

Candidates secretly feel guilty about:

  • following up
  • applying for multiple jobs
  • saying no to a role that doesn’t feel right
  • negotiating their salary (you’re allowed – really!)
  • asking recruiters questions
  • taking time to think

Here’s the truth:

  • You are not a burden.
  • You are not “too much.”
  • You are not asking for anything unreasonable.
  • You are advocating for yourself – that’s courage, not inconvenience.
  • You’re allowed to feel everything

The job search is emotional because it matters. Your work shapes your livelihood, your identity, your confidence, your lifestyle, your joy. Of course it’s personal.

So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a breath. Cry if you need to, vent to a friend, scream into a pillow (therapeutic, 10/10 recommended).

Then pick yourself up and keep going, because your story isn’t finished.

And recruiters? Despite the stereotypes, many of us truly care. We feel your stress. We want you to win. We cheer for you, even silently between meetings. We talk to clients about your strengths with genuine pride. And when you land the role, we glow. Truly. It’s like winning the emotional lottery.

A final note to every candidate reading this

You’re not alone, you’re not failing, you’re not behind. You’re simply in transition – from who you were to who you’re becoming. Your next role is out there, and your next chapter is loading. Your confidence is not measured by a CV, a job title, or the number of interviews you’ve had.

You are allowed to be human in this process. In fact – it’s your greatest strength. Keep going. You’re doing better than you think!
