TED Talk Tuesday #307: Overwhelmed by AI? You have more power than you think
TED continues to spread ideas and help us all be better critical thinkers. Watching, listening and talking about TED Talks is a popular pastime for many in the CN&CO community. We visit TED.com regularly to clear our heads, have a laugh, learn or get inspired. TED Talks open our minds, spark new ways of thinking and can lead to some very interesting conversations and business opportunities. Each month we pick a favourite and publish it on a Tuesday, because we like how “TED Talk Tuesday” sounds. It’s also a way that the CN&CO team play their part in spreading ideas and helping to make the world a better place.

There’s a lot of noise around AI right now. Every headline seems to say the same thing: AI is moving fast, and we’re struggling to keep up. It’s exciting, but also overwhelming.
This TED Talk flips that narrative on its head with a simple but powerful message: You are not behind. You are not powerless. In fact, you have more control than you think.
The real problem isn’t AI – it’s how we think about it
Most people approach AI in one of two ways:
- Fear: “It’s going to replace me.”
- Avoidance: “I’ll deal with it later.”
But both reactions miss the point. AI isn’t something happening to us. It’s something we can actively shape, if we choose to engage with it.
Power in the AI era looks different
Traditionally, power came from things like money, position, or expertise. But in today’s world, power is shifting.
It now comes from:
- Curiosity – being willing to explore new tools
- Adaptability – learning as things change
- Action – actually using what’s available
This talk highlights an important idea: power is not fixed; it’s something that grows when you use it. And right now, AI is one of the most accessible tools we’ve ever had.
You don’t need to be an expert to start
One of the biggest misconceptions about AI is that you need technical skills to use it effectively. You don’t. What you do need is:
- The willingness to try
- The ability to ask better questions
- A mindset of experimentation
AI responds to direction. The better your input, the better your output.
Small actions = real momentum
It’s easy to feel stuck when something feels too big. But the reality is:
- You don’t need to “master AI”
- You just need to start using it in small ways
That might look like:
- Drafting ideas faster
- Summarising information
- Exploring new ways to solve everyday problems
Power builds through use. Not theory.
The simple takeaway
The most important message from this talk is this: AI doesn’t replace your power, it amplifies it. But only if you engage with it. If you sit back, you’ll feel left behind. If you step in, even imperfectly, you start to gain an edge. The gap isn’t between people who understand AI and those who don’t. It’s between:
- Those who use it
- And those who don’t
So instead of asking: “Is AI going to change everything?”, ask: “How can I start using it today?”
Because the moment you do, that’s when your power kicks in.
