5 000 students. R300 million. This is why Feenix matters…

By Blake Dyason

A few weeks ago, we heard that our friends at Feenix had reached an incredible milestone:

  • Over 5 000 students supported.
  • Over R300 million raised towards education.

For a South African NPO that started less than a decade ago, that is massive. But more than the numbers, it is what those numbers represent that really matters. It is 5 000 young people who were given a chance. 5 000 futures that look different today because someone decided to care.

This week, the CN&CO team dropped a gift off at Feenix for one of their morning standups to celebrate the milestone. And honestly, those standups are something special. Every person checks in. They share how they are doing, the highs and lows of the week, and shout out teammates who have helped them. It is human, honest and refreshing. You quickly realise that the culture inside Feenix is deeply connected to the work they do.

We created a poster made up of the names of all 5 000 students who have been supported through Feenix. Every single name forming part of one bigger picture.

Seeing pictures of it being opened in the room was really special, because education is never just about fees.
It is about hope.
It is about dignity.
It is about potential.

One of the things I have loved most about working closely with Feenix is seeing just how much talent there is in South Africa. Young people who are smart, driven, resilient and hungry to make something of their lives. So often, all they need is access.

And that is what Feenix does so well. It creates a bridge between people who want to help and students who need an opportunity.

As individuals, you can support a student directly through the crowdfunding platform, knowing that students are vetted, enrolled and that funds go towards real university expenses.

As businesses, there are meaningful ways to get involved too, from bursaries and payroll giving to helping students settle historic debt and unlock their futures.

The various donation options are spelled out clearly on the Feenix website.

As we head into Youth Month, this feels like the right time to celebrate organisations like Feenix. Not because they have all the answers, but because they are creating real solutions and real impact.

And maybe this is also a reminder that changing somebody’s future does not always require grand gestures.

Sometimes it starts with backing one student.
One donation.
One opportunity.
One decision to believe in someone.

To the entire Feenix team, congratulations. What you have built matters, and South Africa is better because of it.
