Confessions of the un-tech-savvy: How AI became my midnight lifeline

By Michele Katz

Let me start with a confession: I am not what the kids would call “tech-savvy.” In fact, when it comes to technology, I feel a bit like a cat in a bathtub — mildly alarmed, very confused, and wondering how I got here in the first place.

Yes, I can recruit across insurance markets, guide candidates through complex career transitions, and navigate salary conversations that would make most people sweat… But ask me to change a setting on my phone? Next thing you know, I’ve subscribed to a lifetime use of Duolingo, screenshotted my forehead, and somehow turned the font size up to “retirement village large.”

Streaming?

Let’s just say I’ve spent evenings accidentally watching a show in Spanish with Albanian subtitles while loudly insisting, “Something is wrong with the TV!” (the problem cannot possibly be me right?)

Apps?

My phone now has so many folders that even the phone is confused. And what on earth is a DNS configuration?!

Passwords?

At this point I would like to sincerely apologise to every IT professional who has ever dealt with one of my frantic “Why is my password wrong again?!” moments.

Enter Copilot: my tech therapist (who I affectionately now call Molly)

And then — like a digital guardian angel sent from the cloud — I discovered Copilot.

This little AI companion has been my saving grace on many late nights when:

  • I cannot work out why all my Apple services are suddenly not working,
  • A software update has now rendered all my photos in files and folders I can no longer access, or
  • My streaming service politely informs me I’m “watching offline” while I’m very much online.

Copilot doesn’t judge.
Copilot doesn’t sigh audibly
Copilot doesn’t say, “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” in that condescending techie tone.

Instead, it patiently untangles my digital knots, one by one, as if to say: “Don’t worry, Michele. We’ll get through this together. Let’s start by opening the right app.”

But there’s a bigger story here…

What I’ve realised is that my clumsy, comical dance with technology has actually been a lesson in growth. Every time I’ve wanted to throw my phone into the nearest pot plant, I’ve also taken a breath, asked for help (thank you, Molly), and learned something new.

And that’s the powerful thing about embracing AI. It’s not about replacing us; it’s about supporting us in the spaces where we feel uncertain or stuck. It’s about giving us the courage to step into new territory, even if we trip a little on the way in.

So, here’s to all the “un-tech-savvy” warriors

If you’ve ever:

  • tried to Zoom from the wrong account,
  • accidentally muted yourself for an entire group whatsapp call,
  • or yelled “Why is it doing THAT?!” at an inanimate object…

… you’re my people.

And I promise you: with a little humour, a little patience, and a friendly AI guide by your side, you can actually learn to thrive in the areas that once terrified you.

If I can do it? Anyone can.
