TED Talk Tuesday #48: The thrilling potential for off grid solar energy

Watching TED Talks is a popular pastime at CN&CO. We visit TED.com regularly to clear our heads, have a laugh or get inspired. TED Talks open our minds, spark new ways of thinking and can lead to some very interesting conversations. Each week we pick a favourite and publish it on a Tuesday, because we like how “TED Talk Tuesday” sounds. This week’s talk was selected by CN&CO word nerd Carel Nolte. Here’s why he chose it:

I met Anmar at TedGlobal, Tanzania, in 2017. I was blown away by his talk, for sure, but over wine and around bonfires under the gorgeous African skies, I realised that solar was something I needed to upskill on, fast. Despite having engaged with solar via Burningman and the excellent work done by BlackRockSolar, I found myself knowing very little – too little to help make a difference.

I am particularly intrigued by the d.light.com company and although Eskom may well be on track post #Zupta, getting packs like that for South Africa can lead to us improving the lives, and dignity of millions. President Trump may have started taxing solar, but he can’t stop the movement. Join Amnar, myself and millions of other energy crusaders.

Carel is an investor in people and businesses, believing that 1+1 = (at least) 22. Working with a few basic concepts – best encapsulated in his believe that unless we are dead, anything is possible – Carel aims to build long-term sustainable value with like-minded individuals and companies, while having (a lot of!) fun.
