Jozi Film Festival: A small taste of what to expect

The Jozi Film Festival kicks off on 3 October and runs until the 6th. This year the festival will screen films in three venues: Hyde Park Nu Metro, Theatre in the Park (Delta Park) and The Bioscope in Maboneng.

An Ordinary People

This year’s festival will open with Ernest Nkosi’s new documentary film, An Ordinary People, which focuses on the phenomenon of car spinning. Car spinning is South Africa’s first original motorsport, unique for its longstanding popularity, where hustlers and dreamers of modest means become heroes.

Billed as a private screening, this film is hot out of the editing room. JFF is delighted to give Jozi audiences the first look.

Tin Soldiers is the deeply personal story of people afflicted with one of the world’s most rare diseases, Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), and the search to identify those still living in the dark.

The film travels from South African townships to the favelas of Brazil and suburban America, documenting the experiences of patients and their families as they walk differing paths, while sharing a common purpose: to prevail.

RUN AS ONE is the first feature length documentary about the history of the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town, South Africa. Runners from the first race tell the story from its humble beginnings in 1970, when the lunatic fringe of Cape Town runners embarked on a 35-mile race to train for the Comrades Marathon. In 2019, 50 years later, this athletic event drew more than 25 000 people from all over the world to its start line.

The Rhino Cup

Filmed over three years in South Africa and Mozambique, Miles Pizzey has made a documentary about rhino poaching and football. The film not only explains the current severity of poaching in Africa but also follows a unique way of tackling the problem.

Through football, communities and villagers in Mozambique are being uplifted. The Rhino Cup has been created, giving the younger generation something to engage in, improving community spirit, creating jobs and building new infrastructure. People are choosing football over poaching. The ultimate goal: to stop poaching through football before it’s too late.

A team of scientists, divers and photographers set out on a journey of discovery along one of the longest, and richest, coastlines in the world.
