Sharing Oliver Tambo’s Legacy in Tambo Month

October is Tambo Month.

It’s a month to commemorate commemorates late struggle icon, consummate diplomat and doyen of democracy, Oliver Reginald Tambo.  We are proud to be working with the Oliver & Adelaide Tambo Foundation on a number of upcoming events in the month of October.

In honour of O.R. Tambo’s birthday, on the 27th of October, the Oliver & Adelaide Tambo Foundation has a planned a series of activities throughout the course of the month to honour the life and times of this great man. 
 
Oliver Tambo would have turned 102 in 2019. He dedicated his life to fighting for the freedoms that we enjoy today. Thanks to his humble, self-effacing manner, firm but fair leadership style, and the wisdom that he engendered to combat racism and fight for equality, Tambo will forever live in the hearts and minds of the people of South Africa and the many countries he criss-crossed around the globe.

The Tambo Foundation partners with Imbawula to bring you Tambo Lives! – stories about or inspired by O.R. Tambo. 
 
Tambo had a fierce love for all Africans and had a consciousness for women’s rights at a time when many dismissed it as a distraction. These values are more important than ever at this difficult time in our country’s history. The stories told will unpack these values in varied ways, through unique accounts that will explore his influence, personal anecdotes and his contemporary significance.

The proceeds from the Tambo Lives event will assist in the provision of rape survivor kits and sanitary pads in Tambo’s birthplace, Nkantolo, in the Eastern Cape.

The sixth annual Oliver Tambo Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Congresswoman Maxine Waters.
 
Featured on Time magazine’s 2018 list of the 100 most influential people in the world,  Congresswoman Waters has dedicated her life to fighting injustices, not only in her Los Angeles constituency, but across the world. She spent the better part of the 1980s actively protesting and mobilising support against the apartheid regime, including organising and participating in sit-ins at the South African Consulate and protesting against individuals who supported the South Africa’s apartheid regime. 
 
In 2004 she was conferred with the Companions of O.R Tambo by the government of South Africa in recognition for her tireless efforts to fight apartheid.

The Business Breakfast is set to feature fascinating insights from three of South Africa’s top financial and academic thinkers. They will address the theme of,
“Realising Tambo’s Vision for an Equal Society: A Retrospective of 25 Years of Democracy”

  • Ms Gill Marcus, 9th Governor of the South African Reserve Bank
