AD Legacy empowering the youth of Cape Town

In a recent blog on the CN&CO website, Let Awaneo boost your B-BBEE spend through sport, we unpacked a few ideas around grassroots and development sports initiatives that use sport, education and ICT as vehicles to make a meaningful impact on the lives of South Africans.

We recently came across another initiative that aims to uplift South Africans, specifically the underprivileged communities within the Cape Metropole.

AD Legacy – The Adam Davids Youth Empowerment Legacy – is an NPO that focuses on youth development and empowerment. We came to hear about AD Legacy through our good friend at Ami Underwriting Managers, Zaida Mia, who is no stranger to readers of the CN&CO blog. Last year we published an article about her involvement in the Gracious Givers Sadaqa food aid programme, which helps to feed many underprivileged people on the Cape Flats.

AD Legacy has been sponsoring and mentoring youth in the Athlone Community since March 2022. Among other things, the organisation helps with schooling and stationery, and provides food, drinks, transport and equipment for soccer and other sports development initiatives.

“We aim to nurture youth and guide them on mentorship programmes to discover their passion and talents while focusing on their education, health, mental health and fitness,” says Adam Davids, director and founder of AD Legacy.

The NPO’s philosophy is based on a number of key principles:

•          Knowledge, wisdom and understanding

•          Freedom, justice and equality

•          Food, clothing and shelter

•          Love, peace and happiness

There have been some incredible success stories coming out of AD Legacy. These include:

  • Keone Keur (below left), the natural striker: a strong gifted footballer with great attitude towards his goals and dreams. Always willing to learn train and confident in his abilities.

“Working with Keone has been a blessing as we continue to journey all the way to the top,” says Adam. “I took him to SAFA WP Trials where he was incredibly successful.”

  • Maurica Keur (below centre) is also a naturally gifted footballer a vibrant young woman with dreams of becoming a pro player and to study at UCT.

“Maurica is a great student of the game and loves to practise and improve as we continue to mentor and coach her journey,” says Adam. “She did very well in the recent UCT women’s trials.”

  • Joshua Smith (below right), the teen giant: a very respectful young man with dreams of becoming the world’s best goalkeeper.

“Joshua was chased by FC Kaapstadt, but is currently on trial at Cape Town Spurs,” says Adam.

Other success stories include:

  • Zahrah Keur, who was sponsored with uniform and stationery to attend Garlendale High School
  • Seth Erasmus, who qualified at BT Trials to play in Spain and has qualified to play and study in the USA
  • Elroy Arendse, who is learning to play the drums and recently performed a dance/rap live at the Festival of Lights.

“There are many kids in the programme participating and competing for a better future in education, sport and art,” says Adam.

This year AD Legacy is focusing on launching a high-performance development programme in alliance with All Stars FC, Malta Park

“The programme will focus on giving youth the opportunity to pursue their dreams,” says Adam. “We will support them with education, equipment, nutrition and transport. They will also be mentored and guided in life and football, creating leaders and functioning members of society to inspire future generations.”

The programme has grown rapidly and is currently functioning in a private capacity fully funded by Adam.

“We have grown to such a point now where we are starting to need outside funding to assist and ensure a successful path for all the youth involved,” says Adam. “We are open to funding through all forms of donation, whether financial, food or equipment.”

With a new season ahead, AD Legacy requires the following:

“Additionally, we are pleased to announce that All Stars FC in Observatory has offered to assist us on our future plans to continue our journey to develop players,” says Adam. With a 10-year lease granted, we plan to work very closely with the club to present further options to our youth. However, transport (again) is a factor we are working to solve in the future.”
