It’s been just over a year since I changed a few things in my life and the experiences that I have had have positively influenced (and continue to) the person that I am today.

Reflecting on Mandela Day and our future

Reflecting to move forward. Sometimes I wonder if we get caught up in the pace in which the world is moving around us. We can learn a lot from our experiences and from exposing ourselves to different trains of thought and opinions. This evening, while reflecting on the legacy and lessons that Mandela created, I was drawn to this video that was sent to me earlier in the week. But first a quick reminder about Mandela Day, which celebrated its tenth anniversary this year.

Mandela Day was created in honour of Nelson Mandela. It is celebrated each year on the 18th of July, Mandela’s birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009 and therefore celebrated its tenth year today. Today people around the world are encouraged to give 67 minutes of their time contributing to something bigger than themselves. While I applaud the initiative and think that it has great value, I encourage everyone to think bigger and to contribute more to society on an on-going basis. Let us all make an effort to collaborate more and be more open.

This video and story is extremely power. It was shared with me by a friend who is the founder of a business called Imagined Earth and I am excited to be doing some work with them. We all have a role to play in creating our future, helping to make it more sustainable and to produce a better life for all.
