I wish someone had told me the joys of a personal trainer

“I wish someone had told me” is a series of posts that feed into our inquisitive nature at CN&CO. Each week we hear from someone in our network about something interesting or surprising that’s recently happened or occurred to them – or lessons they learnt. These blogs are a way to pay it forward and form part of CN&CO’s belief that the world can be a better place – and we all have a responsibility to make it so. This week’s super-active post is by Colin…

A few months ago we published an article on this blog about personal assistant/trainer Jess Joubert. Jess is PA to EasyEquities CEO, Charles Savage, and trains her personal training clients at the gym next door to Easy’s offices. She structures her day to accommodate both her personal assistant and her personal training duties.

When I read the article I decided to give it a go, and I haven’t looked back. Here are some of the benefits to personal training that I have experienced since starting with Jess.

1. Increased fitness and weight loss

Even though I have been bad when it comes to sticking to the diet Jess gave me, I have still lost a few kilos. I suppose it’s inevitable, really. I see her twice a week and we do a full hour of intensive working out each time. Plus I still go to gym on my own once or twice a week. So now I don’t pant as heavily when I climb stairs and I can tie my shoe laces without holding my breath.

2. I know I’m doing it properly

Jess is there to tell me to pull my elbows in, or when my right foot is migrating outwards. This is very important to prevent injury, particularly repetitive strain injuries that pop up when you do things wrong.

3. It’s fun!

Jess and I get on really well. It’s vital – in the moment – to like the person who is causing you to puff and pant and sweat and strain. Let’s just leave it at that. 🙂

I like to chat while I’m working out. It’s a bit of a distraction. Other people prefer to work out in silence as it helps them to focus. That’s why you need to find a personal trainer who suits your workout preference.

4. It makes me exercise

You know those days when you just don’t feel like it? Well, when you’re paying a trainer to help you with your workout, you jolly well go whether you feel like it or not. I always feel good at the end of the session, which is something to focus on before and during.

5. I get some me-time

There’s always something on the go, right? This is my hour where I don’t have to think about the next article I have to work on on, the wheezing pool pump, the lack of milk in the fridge, Azile’s (grade 3) maths homework…. it’s all about me! And that’s a treat.

Jess works from the Virgin Active at Milpark. If you’re keen to hook yourself up with a few sessions, drop her an email on jtcfitness123@gmail.com.

Colin is our resident wordsmith. He can write absolutely anything and loves to read, too. He even has his own book club.
