TED Talk Tuesday #130: Why women should run more of the world

Watching TED Talks is a popular pastime at CN&CO. We visit TED.com regularly to clear our heads, have a laugh or get inspired. TED Talks open our minds, spark new ways of thinking and can lead to some very interesting conversations. Each week we pick a favourite and publish it on a Tuesday, because we like how “TED Talk Tuesday” sounds. This week’s talk is posted by Carel. Here’s why he chose it:

It will come as no surprise to those who know me (even if only via social media) that I am a firm believer in and supporter of affirmative action, BEE, mentoring programmes and any lever that drives more inclusivity and diversity in leadership. My view is that if our power structures are more representative of our society, we will all benefit. In other words, as a white, Afrikaans male, supporting BEE and gender inclusivity is to my benefit.

After a particularly challenging time in SA where gender violence and discrimination has been highlighted, I have also been deeply moved and inspired by what many (men) have done. ranging from the Kulula cabin controller reading his commitment to making the world a safe place for women to op-eds on what structural changes we need in society – all acknowledge that we can and must do way more.

So, this week I share a TED playlist (more is often more!) with talks by women leaders. I learnt a lot and hope you do to as we move towards making our world better, for all. Thank you to all the women who have and continue to contribute to my life – I am a better man for it. And watch this space – I am attending TEDWomen in December in Palm Springs and will share the lessons I learn there.

Carel is an investor in people and businesses, believing that 1+1 = (at least) 22. Working with a few basic concepts – best encapsulated in his believe that unless we are dead, anything is possible – Carel aims to build long-term sustainable value with like-minded individuals and companies, while having (a lot of!) fun.
