Carel on the Caribbean
If you thought Carbs were bad things to be avoided, think again. Carbs (capital C) were an ethnic group present in the Lesser Antilles and parts of adjacent South America at the time of the Spanish conquest of America.
This is one of the fascinating tidbits in an article on the IOL website entitled The magic of the Caribbean: How to plan your trip by CN&CO’s Carel Nolte. As an avid traveller, Carel has visited the region a good number of times and is due to return to spend some time in Cuba in the next few months.
“The Caribbean is a fascinating, diverse region with an interesting and often untold history – not to mention a fabulous holiday destination,” he says. “Every visit is unique, but there’s a magic that permeates the entire region that I feel every time I visit.”
In the IOL article Carel gives loads of information, plus tips for South Africans visiting the islands.
“There’s a surprisingly large number of Caribbean countries that don’t require visas for South African passport holders,” he says. “Plus Club Med has a host of resorts in the region, as well as a choice of cruises aboard the Club Med 2 during our South African summer.
“Club Med is definitely the way to go when planning a Caribbean holiday – or anywhere, in fact. The all-inclusive holidays mean no unexpected expenses or currency fluctuation risks. Plus kids under 12 stay free. It’s really a no-brainer.”
