Diary of some MADmen – Entry six – 16 February

Diary of some MADmen is a weekly entry from three crazy guys who are part of the #TEAM18 for MAD2run. They will be running from Joburg to Cape Town, in relay, to raise funds for the MAD Leadership Foundation. For those of you who know the three guys; Josh, Kurt and Allan, what they say in their weekly diary entry could more often than not, be taken as them fooling around. But, as they are all Elite Athletes, we aren’t entirely sure if they are…..

JOSH

Kunjani,

Where did this week go?
Honestly feels like it has run (yes pun intended) away from me!
I googled “Manic” in the search for a fitting image and this one hit the nail on the head.

It’s been one of those weeks, loads on the go and it certainly doesn’t feel like Friday! It’s in weeks like these that it is important to reflect, remember what is important to you and keep perspective of the bigger picture.

Anyway, let’s stop complaining, there is lots to be positive about and grateful for!

On the training side, things are going well. The legs are feeling strong and the ‘joy’ of running continues to bring a smile to my face (keeping me less grumpy and sane). I am also managing to practice self-control and not over-do it (long may this continue).

Weekend plans?

Off to the midlands to spend some time with the family. A change of scenery and a different location to get some training miles in! (Road running does get a bit boring after a while)

T-5 weeks till kick off—the BIG journey down to Cape Town is getting closer.

  • Accommodation booked—Airbnb really does make this easy
  • Nutrition for the team ordered—thanks to Chris Wolhuter and the crew at bikalot
  • Drinks plans for our arrival in Cape Town on Friday 30 March being made
  • Kit assessment underway—Adidas running working magic

So, everything seems to be coming together—I am sure there will be some last minute scrambling, but it’s good to have the ‘major’ things under control.

Talking of self-control, congrats to those peeps who have made the commitment to ‘give up’ or take up something for the lent period. I somehow got roped into this as well, hoping I can last and don’t crack till Easter Sunday!

Till next week, keep styling!

Ciao

PS.

If you are in Jozi on the 1st of March, join us and the rest of the MAD2Run18 team at our next fundraising event—our comedy evening. (check out the contribution from our guest contributor in this week’s diary event for more details).

KURT

Dear diary

Feeling demotivated. With that comes procrastination and now anxiety.

I was hoping the cortisone injection would be the miracle cure to my knee issues . . .but alas, it hasn’t!

I did the 8km Pick n Pay run last Sunday, my first run since I went to the doctor for my injection. I felt pretty strong until the 6/7km mark and then felt the niggle, I must admit that it wasn’t as sore as usual but a few hours after the race it made its presence known!

Went to see my physio first thing Monday morning (as I forgot my appointment the week before. Oops), she stuck 12 needles in the back of my quad (hammy) as I also have hamstring tendinitis?!
I have decided I am just going to run until I collapse . . .and going to chow a couple pain killers in-between!

I have also procrastinated about my fund-raising efforts. I really need to up my game here. R50 000 is not going to raise itself.
We have the comedy evening fundraiser coming up on the 1st of March. There are some details in this entry, so check it out and get involved.

No team run this week . . . And I am not joining Allan for park run this weekend either as I have some other commitments, but I will definitely be running.

Allan completed the PnP half marathon last week in his best time (ED. of the season) and I believe looked and felt strong, well done champ!

Josh has been clocking up the miles too, the silent knight who is going to dominate and who I think is going to get the most km out of all the #MADsters!

I did my Discovery Wellness Assessment last week and I am proud to announce I have lost weight, both cm and kg! Thanks, running!

5 weeks to go until MAD, YOH!

Until next time, Ciao!

ALLAN

Dear Diary,

It’s been a funny week. And not like someone has been telling dad jokes all week long kinda funny. It’s been a busy week at work and one where I don’t feel I have done enough running. But I have. Well, for what I was planning on doing, it’s been enough.

This may have been the case for last week but this week has been worse. However, I did have a very good PnP half-marathon last Sunday and my legs felt so good, I could have gone for a run again that afternoon. But I didn’t!

This week(end) I will be doing four days of good running, and partying … kinda.

My plan is to train smart. Quality over quantity. The biggest thing we have to get used to is running on tired legs and minds.

So with that, this is my training schedule for the end of the week:

Thursday (Yesterday) – a very quick (for me anyway) 5km followed by a beer to celebrate the sale of a mates house.

FridayRandburg Harriers Valentines 10km night race. I will push it a little but for the most part I will make sure I am able to run at a comfortable pace and still hold a conversation.
This will be followed by beers with mates at the after party at the venue.

Saturday – Bryanston Parkrun, maybe done twice. Breakfast with mates and other #MADsters followed by a little work before heading to a mate’s kid’s first birthday party.
Note to self: pack beers in the cooler for this.

SundayPirates 21km. One of the toughest half marathons in Joburg. But probably the best one to do on tired legs. If I get a good time, I will be happy.

Monday – That elusive early morning swim may just happen. Who knows.

What I do know is that I am stoked by the improvement I’ve seen in my running. Which, to be honest, isn’t difficult when I’m comparing it to my performance at miniMAD.

Something I am concerned about, although I am running well and feeling good, I still have had to increase the size of my running vest that we are having made. I think I am the ONLY one with a 2XL vest. Not ayoba, at all.

Oh well, at least I’ll be comfortable.

Have a lekker weekend.

xoxo
