I wish someone had told me you don’t need to figure out everything in life

“I wish someone had told me” is a series of posts that feed into our inquisitive nature at CN&CO. Each week we hear from someone in our network about something interesting or surprising that’s recently happened or occurred to them – or lessons they learnt. These blogs are a way to pay it forward and form part of CN&CO’s belief that the world can be a better place – and we all have a responsibility to make it so. This week’s post is by Stella Carter

When we complete high school, we have this pressure to figure out what to do next, which course to pursue in university, what profession to choose, what to do with the rest of your life….

One of the greatest sources of stress and anxiety in our lives is the pressure to have everything figured out. We are constantly being bombarded with messages that tell us we need to have a clear plan for our future in order to achieve success and happiness.

But that’s not necessary! The truth is that we don’t need to have everything figured out in order to live fulfilling lives.

In fact learning to embrace the unknown can be one of the most liberating experiences we can have. When we accept that there will always be uncertainties and challenges in life we are able to approach each day with a sense of curiosity and wonder. We can be open to new experiences and opportunities without feeling like we need to have everything planned out in advance.

Of course this is easier said than done. Society places a high value on control and predictability and it can be difficult to let go of these ideals. But the reality is that the most exciting and rewarding aspects of life often come from unexpected places. When we are willing to take risks and try new things we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities that we could never have imagined.

Now, I’m not saying you should abandon all planning and preparation. Set those goals and work towards them with intention and focus, but remember that our plans are just one possible path and that there will always be detours and obstacles along the way.

Learning to let go of the need to have everything figured out can also help us develop a greater sense of resilience and adaptability and equips us to handle challenges or setbacks better, enabling you to bounce back and find new solutions easier.

Perhaps most importantly, embracing the unknown can help us find greater joy and meaning in our lives. When we let go of the pressure to have everything figured out we are free to explore and discover what truly makes us happy and fulfilled.

So the next time you feel overwhelmed by the need to have everything under control try to remember that it’s ok to not have all the answers. Embrace the unknown and see where life takes you. You may just be surprised by what you find.
