Swiss Hotel School presents its 16th annual pop-up restaurant at 33 on Bond

There are links everywhere! We found out about this pop-up restaurant in Randburg from our former Hollard colleague Busi Radebe, whose son is one of the students at the Swiss Hotel School.

The Swiss Hotel School South Africa, based in Johannesburg, is a world-renowned provider of hospitality education. Graduates of its Degree in Hospitality Management and Professional Culinary Arts programmes (ProfCAP) work in many different parts of the world and are highly sought after by employers in Europe, South Africa, UAE, USA and Australia, to name a few.

The school places enormous emphasis on the practical aspects of education. One of the biggest practicals that happens is the restaurant project, where the third-year students get a chance to open and manage their own restaurant from the ground up. This is a limited-time project and it’s happening right now at 33 on Bond, a pop-up restaurant situated (as its name suggests) at 33 Bond Street in Ferndale, Randburg.

The restaurant is currently open until 8 October from Tuesday dinner to Sunday lunch. The students serve al fresco lunches, fine dining dinners, and Sunday ‘Tapaz and Jazz’.

The fine dining restaurant offers a refined culinary experience with a warm and sophisticated atmosphere. Dinner service runs from 6pm to 9pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays. Each table has a choice of food from the à la carte menu or the six-course tasting menu. The tasting menu can be paired with wine for R745 per person, while the unpaired option costs R595 per person.

The al fresco lunches are set in a relaxing garden and patio area where you can watch the chefs prepare your meals. Most of the dishes are made in a wood-fired oven. The lunches run on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12pm to 3pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 4.30pm. The al fresco lunch is priced at R135 pp, which includes a complimentary 330ml craft beer, soft drink, or a glass of wine. On Fridays you can get one large pizza for R99 with a choice of two toppings. Al fresco meals are also available for takeaway.

On Sundays, the students present a ‘Tapaz and Jazz’ event, with a live jazz band and a wide variety of small dishes to enjoy. There’s also a jumping castle for the little ones. The all-you-can-eat lunch is priced at R395 per person. Children aged 6-12 pay R165 and under-5s eat free.
